10 TIPS FOR TRAVELING AS A COUPLE

1. VOICE YOUR OPINION BEFOREHAND

Communication is key! If you both have an idea of what the other person wants you can plan accordingly. Being on the same page about the trip and what you want to get from it will help you work to make happen.

2. GO OVER THE PLAN

We are usually flexible when it comes to following an itinerary. However, R always makes a rough plan or has an idea of what to do. This makes it easier to choose where to go and improvise if necessary. By going over the plan you can also decide what to wear and if you need to pack lunch for the day.

We don’t like wasting time figuring out what to do (that is why we make travel guides), but it doesn’t mean we are super strict with timings and activities. We just want to make sure we will be able to see everything we want.

3. MAKE SURE YOU ARE BOTH DOING THINGS YOU LIKE/WANT

This is related to tip #1. Make sure there is time for the things you like. Remember that you don’t need to be together all the time.

For example, if one of you likes shopping and the other one hates it, then the shopper can go have fun, while the other does some sightseeing or visits the spa. This will make both experiences more enjoyable and you won’t resent the other person.

4. AVOID UPSETTING SITUATIONS

Every couple has these types of situations, so think ahead. This will not only make things easier, but it will also show your partner you care about them. After all, you know them better than anyone else.

For example, if your partner likes getting to the airport 3h before the flight, but you hate waiting, then plan accordingly. Take a book with you or listen to a podcast. I am sure you will much rather do that than have an argument on your way to the airport.

5. DO THINGS YOU BOTH LOVE AS A COUPLE OR TRY SOMETHING NEW

We love walking and visiting churches, so that is something we always do. We also love trying the local food, especially if it is something we have never heard of.

There are many things you can do. It all depends on your relationship and your common interest. This is how memories are created while traveling as a couple.

6. DEVELOP A TRAVEL STYLE

This comes with time because everyone has their own travel style. You have to work together to see what you are both comfortable with. It’s all about compromises.

For example, we love waking up without an alarm, having breakfast, and walking all day. Then, we have dinner or a picnic and watch movies at night.

This might not be everyone’s ideal travel style, but it works for us.

7. BE PRESENT

Enjoy each other’s company. This might sound silly, but it is easy to get lost between all the new things, the photos, and the itineraries. Oftentimes one person ends up dragging the other one without acknowledging what they want to do.

Make sure you are checking up on each other’s feelings, emotions, and general mood. After all, you are traveling as a couple and making memories together.

8. LEAVE NONE BEHIND

Sometimes one of you might feel sick, tired, or even jet-lagged. Make sure you are not leaving them behind in your rush to see and explore. This will only leave you feeling bad and regretting not taking care of them.

Once they are a-okay then you can both do things together and it will be much more enjoyable.

You can also talk about it. If they feel comfortable with you doing things without them, then enjoy!

9. GO WITH THE FLOW

Traveling will teach you to do this one way or another. You can’t control everything, especially if you are in a foreign country.

The best thing to do is to go with the flow because you can’t control the weather, opening times, or social norms. That is why it is a good idea to go over the plan but don’t be too strict about it.

10. MEET PEOPLE

Make friends along the way and learn from them. We love talking to locals and trying to see the place through their eyes. This will also distract you from each other in case you are starting to get on each other’s nerves.

Who knows, you might find your new best friend or a host for future travels.
