Léelo en Español 🇲🇽 🇨🇴

Does it happen to you that you feel like the camera doesn’t love you? or that it is too awkward to pose because it feels fake or posed? Taking photos as a couple it’s not always easy, specially if you don’t always want the hugging or kissing photo while capturing your travel adventures.

How to pose as a couple while traveling can seem like a lot, but it’s easier than you think! Some couples don’t like a typical photo or like being the center of the photo (like us), since traveling is mostly about showing the places you are visiting and the experiences you are having. So we have good news for you!

As the awkward couple that doesn’t know how to pose and feels like the camera is always too close, we came up with some tricks that help us capture our adventures while still being part of the photo and making it our own.

Here are our tips on how to pose as a couple while traveling even when you feel like the camera is not your friend.

Tips on how to pose as a couple

1. Put yourself in the bigger picture

If what you want to show is the place, then make that the focal point of your photo. Don’t stand too close to the camera and showcase something interesting. It can be a different angle, a side or even a landscape.

Here we wanted to show the courtyard and its plants. We stood behind the ferns so we wouldn’t cover them but we would still show and become part of the place. The focal point of the photo are the plants but we are still there.

2. Don’t look at the camera

Looking straight at the camera will make you feel shy and intimidated, specially if you are not used to it. So what can you do?

Picture a clock: the camera is number 12 and you are at the center. Instead of looking at 12 o’clock, look at 10-11 or 1-2 o’clock. You will be “facing forward” but not looking at the camera. This way you will feel better and will take off some of the pressure.

In this photo we both chose a different time. R went for 10 and I (M) looked at 2. It kinda seems like we were looking at each other seconds before and it seems more natural that looking staring at the camera.

3. Give your back to the camera

Believe it or not, this is a type of portrait photography. Just because you are not showing your face it doesn’t mean is not a photo about you.

Walking away from the camera is a great way to pose like a couple and not feel shy, since you are “doing your thing” while still capturing a great moment.

It’s also a way of showing what you are seeing.

This is one of our favorite ways to take photos. It feels like we are part of the photo while not being the focal point and still showing the place.

4. Try to show a normal situation

By doing this, you won’t feel like you are posing or being stiff. Once you have your frame think how you guys can “become part of the place”. Think about a normal situation that would happen there, like a chat, dancing or even you also looking at the scenery.

Think about what people would normally do in that place. For example, here people sit around have a chat and do some people watching. So that is exactly what we did! Sat there and enjoyed the view while snapping some photos. It makes it look more natural.

5. Burst and live mode are your best friends

Move while taking your photos, then go back and select the pose you like best. Try to move in “slow mo” so your photos are not blurry. You can also just more back and forth doing the same pose.

For this photo we were walking down the street and kept going back and forth on the same 2 meters. We would take a burst even while turning to see what would happen.

Burst mode is when you take a lot of photos at once. If you are on a phone just keep the button pressed for a long time and it will keep taking photos. Then, go to your camera roll and click modify or choose. You can go through all the photos you took at that one point, pick and save your favorites.

6. Have fun

This tip seems obvious, but when you are nervous or don’t like to take photos, you become tense and that shows. Your photos will look stiff or you will always have the feeling something is off. At the end of the day you are with the person you love and that is fun! Have a moment to laugh, dance or do something you both like. This will also make the photos more natural.

Sometimes it takes us 100 photos to get one we like and that is o.k. Most of the times we are doing silly things, creating memories and learning so that next time we can repeat or avoid things.

7. No one is really looking at you

Once you get this in your head things will be so much easier! Nowadays everyone takes photos and does silly things. If they stop to look it might be for inspiration!

This photo we took in front of a really crowded park. It was a bit awkward at first (you can see it on R’s face and the fact that I’m looking away), but literally a minute after people realized we were taking photos, they stopped looking. Funny enough our first photo was our favorite so here it is!

Bonus:

If you can, have someone you trust to take the photo, it will be better. You will feel more comfortable rather than if its a tripod. Plus they know your good angles and can help you pose or correct things.

All our Sevilla photos were taken by R’s sister and they are honestly some our our favorites!
