It’s no secret that plant based milk is slowly taking over. Not only because it is said to be better for our health, but also because it’s better for the environment (dairy farms are very polluting). So of course we had to try them out! Now… these milks are still somewhat of a luxury since they are not mass made and their price seems very elevated compared to cow milk, so we decided to make our own and save some money while helping the planet!
Oats are not expensive at all and when you compare the amount of milk you can make to what it would cost you to buy it (either cow or plant milk) its great! We are super happy with the change and still use milk for everything, even for cooking.
I’m not going to get into the benefits of oats, that would be another post on its own, so I’m just going to tell you how to make the milk.
Making oat milk is actually super simple. We make it every sunday and it lasts us for the week. We also make desserts with the pulp so we have less waste and something else to look forward during the week.
Lets make some oat milk!
1.Depending on the type of oats you get you might need to soak them. If so, cover the oats with hot water for about an hour before starting. After an hour, drain the oats and put them inside your blender.
2. Add 1 liter of water for every cup of oats.
3. Blend until all the flakes have disappeared and the mixture is homogeneous.
4. Strain the mixture with a nut bag or with a cloth. If you don’t have one, no need to buy one, you can make your own with our guide on how to make reusable bags. They are multi purpose!
That is it! now you have oat milk for cooking or adding it to your coffee or tea. It doesn’t add any extra flavours and makes things so creamy and good!
If you want your milk to be a little sweet you can add a date, a little bit of sugar or a dash of vanilla when blending it. We usually make two badges, a sweet one and a normal one. The sweet one we use for cereal or just for drinking (if we have it with cookies or sweets) and the normal one for the rest of things.
Now for the pulp…
You can save it and make a big badge of cookies, crumble or get creative with it. If so, put it in the freezer and then take it out when you are ready to use it. We like to use it right away and get creative with it.
As a “base” we add brown sugar and vanilla. From there we have added apples, chocolate chips, coconut shavings or even just left it with the base.
Then you put it in the oven at 200 celsius for about 10-15 minutes and you are done!
Hope this was helpful and you can add this oat milk to your life in a seamless way. Like the oatly campagne says “it’s like milk but made for humans”.
